Arriving at Velana: know who is meeting you
For TMA transfers, the operator instructs passengers to meet their resort or tour operator representative in the Arrival Area after immigration. That representative directs you to seaplane check-in. Other transfers have their own arrangements: obtain the exact meeting point and contact number rather than assuming someone will be waiting.
Keep your accommodation name, booking confirmation, flight number and transfer contact available offline. Before leaving the arrivals area, confirm you are with the operator named in your booking. A ticket to Malé or Hulhumalé is not automatically a ticket to your final island.
Speedboats and public ferries are different bookings
An accommodation-arranged speedboat may be shared or private. Ask whether it leaves from the airport or a different jetty, whether it has a fixed departure, and whether airport-to-jetty transport is included. Do not assume every local island has a direct airport speedboat or an evening departure.
RTL is a public high-speed inter-island ferry network operated by MTCC, described in Maldivian's official Kooddoo connectivity announcement. A public ferry is not the same as a private resort or guesthouse transfer. Check the actual origin, destination and operating date with RTL; a route serving your atoll does not prove a convenient connection to your accommodation.
The 4 August 2024 airline announcement described a specific Kooddoo–Villingili ferry connection. It is historical evidence of that connection, not a current timetable and not evidence of a direct Kooddoo–Gemanafushi service. We do not publish an unconfirmed fare, boat duration or departure time here.
Domestic flight, then an onward boat
For islands reached through a regional airport, plan the flight and onward boat as one journey even if they are separate bookings. Maldivian's published FAQ requires passengers to disclose onward connections when booking and states a minimum of two hours between domestic and international flights at Velana.
That published minimum is not a promise that every connection will work, especially with separate tickets, immigration queues, baggage collection or delays. Ask the airline and accommodation for a suitable buffer for your itinerary, and confirm which party helps if a connection is missed.
Maldivian's FAQ says domestic counters open two hours before departure and close one hour before the scheduled flight. Recheck the instructions on your booking and present valid photo identification at check-in; keep your passport with you.
Gemanafushi: plan around Kooddoo Airport
For a Gemanafushi stay, the journey we plan around is a domestic flight from Malé to Kooddoo Airport (GKK), then a separately arranged boat to Gemanafushi in Gaafu Alifu Atoll. Maldivian's official announcement documents its Kooddoo service, but it does not confirm a boat to Gemanafushi for your dates.
Before paying, have your accommodation confirm the boat operator, airport meeting point, full transfer price from the boat operator and arrangements after a flight delay. Confirm both directions: an arrival transfer does not establish that a return boat will meet your international flight. We have not verified a current public ferry connection, fare or journey time for this final leg.
Seaplanes: daylight and resort coordination matter
TMA says resort transfer reservations are made through its partner resorts, via the resort, travel agent or tour operator. Do not assume you can book an advance individual seat directly with TMA or use a resort seaplane as a scheduled transfer to any local island.
TMA operates from sunrise to sunset. Its FAQ advises international arrival by 15:30 local time for same-day resort travel and says it accommodates scheduled international departures after 09:00. These are TMA's published planning guidelines, not a guaranteed connection or rules for every operator; confirm your exact flights with your resort before booking.
After airport check-in, TMA transfers passengers by ground transport to the seaplane terminal; hold bags travel separately. Keep medication and essentials in hand luggage. Lounge access depends on the booking and should be confirmed with the resort rather than assumed to be included.
Check baggage for every leg, not just the international flight
TMA's standard allowance is 20 kg checked baggage plus 5 kg hand luggage per person, with no additional allowance for infants; no single bag may exceed 32 kg. Its FAQ lists excess baggage at USD 5 per kg plus applicable taxes. This is a published TMA baggage charge, not a Little Francis transfer service; recheck it with your booking.
Maldivian's FAQ lists 20 kg for domestic economy checked baggage and 5 kg cabin baggage on Dash 8 and ATR aircraft. Your ticket, fare and aircraft govern the final allowance: ask the airline to confirm those details, especially for dive gear, surfboards, camera batteries or oversized bags.
A generous long-haul allowance does not carry over automatically to a small aircraft or boat. Tell every operator what you are bringing and ask about weight, dimensions, carriage approval and additional charges before departure.
Late arrivals, disruption and the return journey
If your arrival cannot meet the confirmed onward departure, arrange an overnight stay in advance rather than relying on an unconfirmed late boat. TMA's FAQ specifically suggests Malé or Hulhumalé when an international arrival is too late for a same-day seaplane.
Ask the transfer operator how weather or flight delays affect your booking, who you should call, and who pays for replacement transport or an extra night. These terms depend on your actual booking; we cannot promise automatic rebooking or refund rights.
On the way home, work backwards from international check-in, not just take-off. Confirm the boat or domestic departure, baggage handover, arrival terminal and connection buffer with the operators. Share the international flight details when booking the domestic leg.
Confirm these details with each provider
Use this planning checklist with your accommodation and transport operator. It is a list of questions to confirm, not a claim that these arrangements are already included.
- Both transfer directions, exact islands and airports, operator names and booking references.
- Your international flight details, meeting point, departure location and contact number.
- The full price and confirmed currency, whether it is per person or per boat, one-way or return, and which taxes or extra legs are excluded.
- Baggage limits and approval for oversized or specialist equipment on every leg.
- Latest acceptable arrival, return check-in buffer, delay policy, cancellation terms and overnight arrangements.
- Who coordinates the whole journey when the flight and boat are booked separately.
