Gaafu Alifu Atoll

Gemanafushi — Richard and Risan's home island

Gemanafushi is a local island in Gaafu Alifu Atoll, in the far south of the Maldives. It's where our co-founders Richard and Risan grew up — and the island we know best.

A working fishing community, beaches and a locally based dive centre — with the practical details you need before travelling this far south.

Getting here

Domestic flight to Kooddoo or Maavarulu, then a speedboat transfer arranged directly with your guesthouse or a local boat operator.

Life in Gaafu Alifu Atoll

Get to know Gemanafushi

Gemanafushi sits in the northern administrative half of Huvadhu Atoll, roughly 400 km south of Malé. The atoll council records an island area of 51.16 hectares, a school, a police station and a health centre. This is an inhabited island, not a private resort: everyday life and the fishing community are part of the visit.

A working fishing island

Fishing and agriculture are central to island life. The atoll council identifies Gemanafushi as a producer of dried seafood and other fish products. OneOcean also describes the island's pole-and-line tuna fishing and rihaakuru, a concentrated tuna paste.

Beaches & time by the water

The atoll council confirms beaches and picnic areas. OneOcean names Zero Beach, Maareha View Beach and Sunrise Beach. Check locally which areas are suitable for visitors, swimwear and swimming that day; a named beach is not confirmation of a designated bikini beach.

Diving around Gemanafushi

OneOcean identifies Gemanafushi Corner as a channel connecting the atoll with the open ocean. Site choice depends on conditions and your experience: ask the dive centre about currents, required qualifications and guided options rather than assuming every site is suitable for beginners.

Is there a doctor on the island?

What official sources confirm

The Ministry of Health lists GA. Gemanafushi Health Centre as a Grade 3 health centre. An official President's Office release dated 12 September 2021 reports its upgrade to provide 24-hour care, but also records concerns about staffing and infrastructure. This is historical evidence of the service, not confirmation of today's staffing.

What we could not confirm

As of 9 October 2026, we could not confirm from current official public sources whether a resident doctor is in post, when a doctor is on duty, consultation hours or whether 24-hour care is still available. The facility register is not a current duty roster; its professional count does not establish whether a doctor is present or absent. We cannot promise a doctor on the island or round-the-clock medical care for your visit.

Check directly before travelling

The atoll council lists 7881313 for Gemanafushi Health Centre. Ask the centre to confirm doctor availability, consultation hours and after-hours arrangements for your travel dates. This is a published contact number, not a verified emergency hotline; we have not tested it by calling.

Gemanafushi Health Centre: +960 788 1313

If you have a medical condition or need regular treatment, confirm your requirements directly with the health centre before booking. Discuss access to higher-level care and medical evacuation cover with your travel insurer; do not assume the island facility can provide specialist treatment.

Plan the journey before you book

The route we plan around is a domestic flight from Malé to either Kooddoo Airport (GKK) or Maavarulu, followed by a speedboat transfer to Gemanafushi. The flight and boat connection need to be coordinated for your dates — do not assume a scheduled public boat will meet every flight.

  • Confirm who arranges the boat, the meeting point and what happens after a flight delay.
  • Ask about baggage allowances, especially if you travel with dive equipment.
  • The prices below are indicative, checked by our team in October 2026. You book and pay flights with the airline and boat transfers with your guesthouse or boat operator — confirm the final price, taxes and cancellation terms with them.

Transfer options and prices

Option 1 — via Kooddoo

  • Malé → KooddooUS$ 447.20 return
  • Kooddoo → GemanafushiUS$ 583.70 return

The speedboat price is a private hire for the whole boat, not per person. It takes 6–8 people, depending on luggage.

Option 2 — via Maavarulu

  • Malé → MaavaruluUS$ 447.20 return
  • Maavarulu → GemanafushiUS$ 325.00 return

The speedboat price is a private hire for the whole boat, not per person. It takes 6–8 people, depending on luggage.

Confirmed by our team, October 2026. Each leg is a return fare. Confirm the final price and baggage rules directly with the airline and the boat operator.

Safety & medical help

Emergency & local contacts

In immediate danger, call the relevant emergency service and state that you are on Gemanafushi, Gaafu Alifu Atoll. The numbers below are published by official authorities and were checked on 9 October 2026; we have not tested them by calling. Short codes are for calls within the Maldives.

We have not confirmed a dedicated Gemanafushi ambulance number or local ambulance coverage. National directories differ on ambulance short codes, so no unconfirmed ambulance number is listed here. These contacts do not guarantee a doctor, rescue vessel or medical evacuation on the island.

Healthcare on the island & regional referral care

The confirmed healthcare facility on Gemanafushi itself is GA. Gemanafushi Health Centre. Its presence on the island does not confirm a doctor on duty, emergency treatment capacity or current opening hours.

Dr. Abdul Samad Memorial Hospital

Narugismagu, Thinadhoo, Gaafu Dhaalu Atoll, 17100

The hospital's official website identifies it as the former Thinadhoo Regional Hospital and a referral facility serving both Gaafu Alifu and Gaafu Dhaalu. It lists laboratory, X-ray, dialysis, operating theatre, CT scan and mammography services. These published services are not confirmation of availability for your dates or condition.

+960 684 1977

Published general contact, not a confirmed emergency hotline.

Which facility can you actually reach?

This is a verified regional referral option, not a confirmed nearest or fastest-accessible hospital from Gemanafushi. We could not establish from official sources which off-island facility can receive a patient soonest, or confirm a medical boat, transfer time, cost or round-the-clock transfer availability. A clinician or emergency service must determine the receiving facility and transport; ordinary visitor boat transfers are not medical evacuation services.

Before booking, confirm treatment needs with the health centre and medical evacuation cover with your insurer. Do not assume a regional hospital listing establishes emergency access from this island.

A few things to check for your stay

Maldives practical guide: visas, religion, emergency help & embassies

Beach etiquette

Ask your host about visitor swimwear areas and dress respectfully in the village. The beach names listed above do not establish where bikinis are permitted.

Daily essentials

Check meal options, drinking water, payment methods, cash access and Wi-Fi with your accommodation. We have not confirmed an ATM or pharmacy for visitors, so do not rely on either without checking.

Time in the water

Discuss swimming and snorkeling conditions with your host or dive centre. Courses, boat trips, equipment and guided sessions need their own confirmation; none is automatically included in a stay.
