South Ari Atoll

Maamigili

Maamigili is one of the larger islands in South Ari Atoll and has a domestic airport, which makes it a convenient base for whale shark trips. It's a busy, working island with a strong local character. People are surprised how fast you can get here by plane — and how close the whale shark area is once you land.

What it's like to stay here

There's a small number of guesthouses and hotels, with cafés and shops in the village. Bikini-friendly areas exist but are more limited than on the classic guesthouse islands. Local dress rules apply. The island is lively by day and quiet by night.

Pros

  • Domestic airport — quick access by air from Malé
  • Close to the South Ari whale shark area
  • A real working island with a strong local feel

Cons

  • Fewer beach and bikini options than smaller tourist islands
  • Less set up for tourists than Dhigurah or Maafushi

Getting there

Domestic flights from Malé to Maamigili take about 30 minutes. Speedboats from Malé take around 1.5–2 hours. Public ferries are slower and less frequent.

The reef & the water

Most snorkelling and diving happens by boat, with trips to the whale shark area and nearby reefs. Mantas can be seen at cleaning stations in the atoll.
