South Ari Atoll

Dhigurah

Dhigurah is a long, thin island about three kilometres end to end, sitting right next to the South Ari Marine Protected Area — one of the most reliable places in the world to see whale sharks. It's calm, green and sandy, with a beach that runs much of the island's length. People are often surprised how quiet it is for an island with such famous neighbours in the water.

What it's like to stay here

Guesthouses cluster in the village, with a bikini beach a short walk away. A sandy path runs the length of the island through the trees, perfect for walking or cycling. Food is mostly at guesthouses and a few cafés. Evenings are very quiet. Days revolve around boat trips: whale sharks, mantas, sandbanks and snorkelling.

Pros

  • Right beside the South Ari whale shark area
  • Long beach and a sandbank at the southern tip
  • Quiet, green and easy to explore on foot or bike

Cons

  • Far from the airport — a longer, pricier transfer
  • Limited dining options beyond guesthouses

Getting there

Dhigurah is in South Ari Atoll. The quickest way is a shared speedboat from Malé of around 1.5–2 hours, or a domestic flight to Maamigili followed by a short boat ride. A slower public ferry runs on some days.

The reef & the water

There's snorkelling on the reef just off the island, but the real draw is the nearby marine protected area where whale sharks are seen year-round. Mantas visit cleaning stations in the area too. Dive centres on the island run trips to South Ari's reefs and channels.
