South Ari Atoll
Dhangethi
Dhangethi is a compact, traditional island in South Ari Atoll, near the whale shark area and several well-known dive sites. Tourism here is still small-scale, so daily island life is easy to see. People who come for the diving often find the island itself is the pleasant surprise.

What it's like to stay here
The island is small and walkable, with a handful of guesthouses, a few cafés and local shops. There's a designated bikini beach area, though it's smaller than on the bigger tourist islands. Local dress rules apply in the village. Evenings are quiet and community-centred.
Pros
- Close to whale shark and manta areas
- Traditional island life, with modest tourism
- Good access to South Ari dive sites
Cons
- Fewer guesthouses and food options
- Smaller bikini beach than on busier islands
Getting there
Dhangethi is in South Ari Atoll, around 1.5–2 hours from Malé by shared speedboat. A domestic flight to Maamigili plus a boat transfer is another option. A slower public ferry runs on some days.
The reef & the water
Snorkelling is possible around the island, and boat trips reach whale shark and manta areas nearby. Divers have easy access to South Ari's channels, thilas and reefs through local dive operators.
